For Teachers:

This page began as the assignment page for the youth journalists that went to the Montréal Protocol Meeting in Montréal in September of 1997.

We've now made it into a teacher's page. The goal is for teachers to be able to use our assignments, or use them as a starting point to create their own.

The rest of the Montréal Protocol site can be used as research material and/or inspiration for discussion. This will enable students to learn about substances that harm the ozone layer, the greenhouse effect, the effects of UV, etc... It will also serve as a useful activity for teaching: research skills, Internet and computer skills, written communication and group skills.

You can email student projects and reports to our student editorial board. The best ones will be put on our website.

Week 1:

Assignment: "I statement" write your own biography. In 250 words or less, tell us about yourself - who you are, where you live, your interests, pet-peeves....

What is the Montreal Protocol?: Research the Montréal Protocol using the internet, the library or any other unique resources you can come up with. Do a write up on what you find (approximately 250 words).

Week 2:

Assignment: "The Ozone Layer and its Depletion" Choose an ozone issue that effects you (ie. global warming, effects of the sun, emissions) and write a small report (250-500 words) on it as if your report was going to be in a newsletter for all of the students at your school or in your community.

Week 3:

Assignment: "Ozone Successes" Use your interview skills to report on a community initiative that is contributing to the restoration of the ozone layer.

How else could this work?

Our team, that worked on these exercises, was spread out across the country. We couldn't exactly sit in a room together and discuss the issues. So, we did all the activities long distance using the latest technology. Contact us if you'd like more information on how to integrate other classes and students from other schools, other provinces or other countries.
